Talking Points Memo has posted the latest Republican social networking meltdown, as a Facebook post by Arlington, Tennessee Mayor Russell Wiseman was released to the press, by a friend, due to the nature of the content.
In the post, Arlington Mayor Russell Wiseman said this week's President Barack Obama Afghanistan speech was deliberately timed to (of all things) block the Christian message of the "Peanuts" television Christmas special.
Seriously, he said that. Here's part of the post:
"Ok, so, this is total crap, we sit the kids down to watch 'The Charlie Brown Christmas Special' and our muslim president is there, what a load.....try to convince me that wasn't done on purpose. Ask the man if he believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he will give you a 10 minute disertation (sic) about it....w...hen the answer should simply be 'yes'...."
And he doesn't stop there.
Later during Wiseman's extensive thread attacking the president, his supporters and Muslims, the Tennessee Republican mayor stated "...you obama people need to move to a muslim country...oh wait, that's America....pitiful."
At another point he even goes so far as to seemingly suggest returning back to the days of slavery and eliminating the right to vote for people of color as well as their right to hold office by saying, "you know, our forefathers had it written in the original Constitution that ONLY property owners could vote, if that had stayed in there, things would be different........"
This type of behavior on the part of an elected official is not only unprofessional and pathetic; it's also simply unacceptable in America today.
We are calling on the people and press of Tennessee as well as both state Democratic and Republican parties to ask Russell Wiseman to not only publicly apologize for the comments made, but also step down as Mayor of Arlington, Tennesse.

Nice post KC Blue Blog!
ReplyDeleteWhen Wiseman wrote "you know, our forefathers had it written in the original Constitution that ONLY property owners could vote, if that had stayed in there, things would be different........" what exactly was your interpretation of that Anons?
It was a clear indication that he was referring to a point in time during the history of our voting rights when only land owners, who were almost exclusively white males over 21 and of Protestant religion, had the right to vote. Furthermore he was clearly saying that our country would be better off had we maintained that voting practice throughout the years.
The guy's a bonehead racist. No if ands or buts about it. If the Republican party doesn't begin kicking out all of these crazies and racists I'm never voting for them again.

ReplyDeleteWhen someone owns land they pay tax's
they buy things
and pay more tax's
owning and keeping property
used to be the American dream.
and should be still.
You have a greater stake in America
Win or Lose
Most of the people who voted for
Barak Hussien Obama could care less
where the money comes from as long as they
get it.
regardless if they payed any tax or not.
Who in their right mind would want to
pay tax's and recieve no benifit,or see
the tax dollars go to someone who has not payed one dime in tax's
Property owners have a lot at stake in tax's
and you are a fool if you cannot see that.
wake up your free ride will soon be over
cause the Chinese will put your lazy ass's
to work when they take ove.
pray to Mohommed all you want, he can't help

Actually, I'd guess everyone owns some "property," although not in form of land (e.g. clothing, radio, tv, etc...). If we limited voting to land "owners," I don't know how many people would qualify. People don't technically own their homes if they have a mortgage. Fortunatley, I paid mine off a couple of years ago, but I'm 57 years old.
ReplyDeleteThe whole idea of property (land) ownership as a prerequisite for voting was simply a method of restricting voting to a relatively few. Obviously, anyone who owns a business, but rents land and a apartment, has just as much at stake as someone who inherited his land and sits on his rear.
